The Pitfalls of YouTube Film Criticism: Why Negativity Can Be Counterproductive

I’m a fan of movies and a bigger fan of film criticism, there’s something about breaking down a film or tv show to its base elements and exploring why and how certain choices where made, what worked and what didn’t and the pitfalls and successes that went into making a film. Over time, however, especially in the Youtube space I’ve found that the majority of film criticism on Youtube is overwhelmingly negative.

Instead of breaking down a film or TV show and outlining the objective good or bad points of the piece of media, they seem to luxuriate in the idea that their favourite franchises/media is destroying itself.

The latest victim of this is Disney+’s the Mandalorian and its inclusion of Jack Black And Lizzo in cameo roles for a single episode. Titles such as “Disney Star Wars The Mandalorian Is A CRINGE DISASTER | Fans ROAST Lizzo And Jack Black Cameos” or “The Mandalorian is DUMB | Lucasfilm is a DISASTER” and “The Mandalorian is Dead” litter the first page of Youtube results and as a Star Wars Fan, I have to ask to my fellow Rebels is this the hill you want to die on?
